Liberty customers already receive high-quality, reliable drinking water. Now, a major upgrade in Baldwin will make it even better.
A new iron removal facility is being built to further enhance water clarity, strengthen system reliability, and support growing demand across the community.
Why is the iron removal facility being built?
Located behind the existing wellhouse on the west side of Dartmouth Street between Demott Avenue and Madison Avenue, the new facility will add an advanced layer of treatment to an already robust process.
Iron occurs naturally in Long Island's groundwater. While it does not impact health, it can occasionally cause slight discoloration, especially during times of high-water use. The new system will remove the iron that causes this aesthetic issue.
Inside the facility, four large pressure vessels will filter water through sand to remove iron. This added step will complement existing treatment processes, including pH optimization and disinfection.
Benefits customers will notice
The facility is expected to be operational in early 2027. "Customers will see improved water clarity and even more consistent water pressure," said Richard Kern, Director of Operations. "The plant will also support reliable service during high demand periods."
Minimal impact during construction
Construction began in late April 2026 and is taking place entirely within the existing property. There will be no interruption to water service during this work.
Kern said that no existing trees or shrubs will be removed. "We are also adding new landscaping and a six-foot PVC fence to help screen the facility."
Investing in the future
The upgraded facility will allow the plant to operate more consistently, supporting dependable service and high-quality water for current and future generations.
